1. 研究目的与意义
language is a tool for people to communicate. with the rapid development of science and technology, the scope of people''s communication is rapidly expanding, the content of communication is also constantly enriched, and language is constantly changing and developing. society is a dynamic system and language, as one of the factors that make up society, is influenced by social factors and is constantly changing to meet the needs of people. (ci [慈建华], 2015) it is in this context that sociolinguistics emerged. linguistic variation is an important concept in sociolinguistics, which refers to the variation in language that occurs as a result of a variety of factors in the process of communication. language variants are closely related to extra-linguistic factors and reflect, to some extent, the relationship between language and society.
the real world is a source of artistic inspiration for film. film creation is attuned to the aesthetics of the public and reflects the real state of society. film creation expresses some of the current state of society and social issues in an artistic way, bringing them to the audience for reflection. the film my fair lady, adapted from george bernard shaw''s pygmalion, effectively reflects the current state of society at the time and has an enduring artistic appeal.
the characters in the film my fair lady are diverse, ranging in social status from high to low, and the language of the different characters is also distinctive. by analyzing the language used by the different characters in the film, a more comprehensive and deeper understanding of the use of language and the relationship between language and society can be gained.

3. 国内外研究现状
social variants, which can reveal the relationship between individual speakers and their relationship between the individual speaker and his or her social identity, classifying people according to gender, age, status and other factors belonging to different groups.(hudson, 2000)different language variants are used by different groups of people from different social classes, genders, ages, etc.different groups of people, from different social classes, genders, ages, etc.use different language variants.(hu [胡壮麟], 2007) according to paul, your social rank is already 'a mixture of subtle, unconscious characteristics of your behaviour that make up your rank in society.' (paul [保罗福塞尔], 1998) regardless of the form of communication, if we ask: 'what is it that we communicate? what is the content of our communication? 'the simplest answer is 'social information'. (halliday, 2001) the main linguistic variants, according to social factors, are gender variants, class variants and age variants. the study of linguistic variants probably began with j. schmidt''s ''''wave'''' theory, which argued that linguistic variants arose from a synchronous system of language. in the twentieth century, j.r. firth developed a new concept of linguistic variation, and the famous linguist halliday built on the work of his predecessors, arguing that the contextual, cultural and social signs of language are also important. (berry,1975). then in 1968, william labov explored the essence of language variant and the methods of studying related theories.(labov, 1966)
the hollywood film my fair lady is a classic in the history of cinema and one of audrey hepburn''s most famous works. the film focuses on a poor flower seller living at the bottom of the social ladder who is trained by a famous linguistics professor to completely change her accent and speaking style to sound like a duchess or some upper class lady living in buckingham palace.(luo [罗娟] amp; fen [冯志强], 2011) social language has a lot to do with the way a person speaks and their personal habits, as people from different social classes have different lifestyles and are cultivated differently in terms of food, speech and housing.(lv [吕琳],2019). the value of this film is not only reflected in the artistic value of the film itself, but also in the value of linguistic research. at the beginning of the film, the professor uses the accents of different people to determine the area in which they live, which directly demonstrates how linguistic variants can reflect the environment in which a person lives. in this movie,in the case of the class variant, for example, as trudgill says, social class classifies speakers according to the different classes they occupy in a society, mainly according to their economic ability, and the higher their economic ability, the higher their social status.(trudgill, 2006). and as for gender, some men of high social status may use non-standard or even vulgar words to emphasize their manliness and strengthen their social status.(chen [陈海霞], 2011)
while previous research has yielded many results, this paper will explore the relationship between language and society from a sociolinguistics perspective, analyzing the diction, style and accent of characters in three different dimensions: class variants, gender variants and age variants, and in the context of their social background.
