Decoding, Reconstruction and Film Characters: A Case Study of Mulan电影人物的解码与重构：以《花木兰》为例开题报告

研究问题：in recent years, many traditional chinesestories have been adapted and shown on the screen in western countries. on theone hand, it is a great opportunity for chinese culture to be exported to theoutside world. on the other hand, from a cross-cultural perspective, theadaptation of traditional chinese stories by different cultural environmentsand value orientations will also lead to the deviation of the core of thestories. therefore, this paper will analyze the differences between the film mulan and the original story of hua mulan in terms of characters, plot and themes,and explore the reasons for these differences.

理论框架：this paper will take the film mulan released by disney in 2020 asan example, and compare its differences with the original story of hua mualnand the reasons behind it according to the coding and decoding theoryelaborated by stuart hall in his work encoding and decoding in the televisiondiscourse.

asthe international communication capacity of chinese culture is improving day byday, more and more chinese stories have been adapted for the internationalscreen. however, in the increasingly intense dissemination of 'chinese wave',are these adapted works brand new chinese stories presented from a westernperspective, or just westernized stories with chinese style as a gimmick? disney''slive-action mulan in 2020 is a case in point.

mulan has developed into a newsystem of representations through cultural filtering and the authors’reinterpreting in an american context (qing yang, 2018, p.56）. there are mixed commentson this expression. fangyi xu (2021) points out that the change of hua mulanactually represents a larger stage for chinese female liberation images and abold exploration of multiple possibilities of female liberation images. similarly,some authors believe that disney''s adaptation and continuation of china''s'mulan' motifs not only incorporates american values such as'individual heroism' and 'freedom of marriage', it alsoreflects the rise of feminism in the west to some extent (jinlong xu amp;houxiang ji, 2021, p.105). zaozao zhang (2020) also said that different filmsadapted from mulan exist in different narrative discourse systems, which arethe reconstruction of the original purport of mulan''s story afterdeconstruction and derive new discourse meanings. although the image of hua mulancreated by disney does have one aspect of female consciousness awakening, someauthors found that mulan did not break away from the 'film andtelevision industry' attribute of hollywood in the united states and fellinto the stylized narrative (linyu zhao, 2021, p.98).xia deng (2021), on the other hand, believesthat the american concept focuses on depicting individualism and lacks the coreof hua mulan''s original story.
